Biography
Gideon Abowha is a Nigerian-born visual artist based in the United Kingdom. His painting and mixed-media practice explores memory, identity, resilience and cultural heritage through contemporary interpretations of African ceremonies and traditions. His work has been featured by Tribune Online, Independent Newspaper and PM News Nigeria. His current series, Ceremonies of Becoming, combines acrylic, fabric, beads and newsprint to reinterpret the Durbar Festival, Yoruba traditional dance, Argungu Fishing Festival, Mursi practices and Fulani heritage.
Artist Statement
My work explores the living continuity of African cultural traditions through contemporary painting and mixed media. Drawing from ceremonies, festivals and rituals, I create layered compositions reflecting memory, identity and the experience of carrying heritage across time. By combining acrylic, fabric, beads and newsprint, I build textured surfaces that honour the past while engaging with the present. Ceremonies of Becoming retells traditional stories in ways that are both personal and universally resonant.
